Rev. Jeremiah Wright speaks at NAACP

Here’s Obama’s “crazy” pastor making his “controversial” comments before the Detroit NAACP a few days ago. This is the last seven minutes of roughly a one hour speech.

Watch it and decide whether you think he’s not a qualified pastor. In the middle of the speech, he talks about different linguistic and musical patterns to support his argument that different is not deficient. For example, white churches are likely to clap on the 1st and 3rd beat of a 4/4 measure and black churches are more likely to clap on the 2nd and 4th. He seems to be suggesting that the difference is more inherit than cultural. He also talks about right-brained and left-brained learning styles. The science on this one is, I believe, bad, but the main sentiment, that it’s okay to be different, should be pretty uncontroversial.

But the main reason I link is to show that Wright can be a powerful and motivational speaker and that even if he has some loopy ideas, he’s not the hatemonger the media tries to portray him as.

A “qualified pastor” he may be…but his rhetoric is hurting Obama.  I’m thrilled that he took the time today to address this issue, but now I think it’s time for him, for all of us, to move on. Wright has been a distraction for far too long. Enough is enough.
